Most pro tree brakes do not use the small spring. If the brake works sometimes and not others, check to see if you have proper voltage at the trans. If that is ok the plunger is sticking. I have had this problem before and the cure for it is to take the plunger out put it in a drill and polish it with emery cloth or fine sandpaper. I try to do this about every 50 passes. The sticking on mine was worse when the trans got hot after going a few rounds. Hope this helps, Gary

Dean take a look at the roll pin ging thru the piston on the solinoid. Its in between the body and the part that moves. Ihad a roll pin that was not in all the way and it would bind up the solinoid every once and a while.

I would put the spring behind the valve anyway it helps quicken the release as an aid to the fluid release therfor if you ever have a air poket in the reverse channel the spring will still release the valve and allow the brake to work properly
Just my 2 cents and 23 yrs of transmission experiance
