At Farmington we (the racers) had several short conversations regarding the future state and rules of the performance street class. It sounded like most racers wanted the class to run lower E.T.’s and move forward. In my opinion and that is what this is I feel the class is running in a great E.T. range. The spectators enjoy seeing cars that are so close to breaking the 5.9x barrier but still resemble cars that most people have and race. The rules were looked at very close last year and for the most part the class seemed very even. Now the nitrous cars seem to have an advantage, because they have ran the coveted 5.9x @ 115mph. Now with that being said the idea that was being kicked around in the pits was to allow the larger cubic inch motor to run nitrous and just give them a smaller jet limit like a 50jet (100hp?). And the smaller cubic inch motors a larger jet 75 (180-190hp?) limit. 100hp added to a car that already runs 6.10 is not going to net a 5.8x, it will be much faster than that and we all know it. Also we still have racers that want to run all motor so now we need or have to adjust the weight of these cars to get them into the 5.8x’s, that is a lot of weight. To me this is a lot of changing to a class that is so close in E.T. for their being so many different combination. Everyone wants the class to grow. And it did with 14 total participants, we had 7 new racer with 6 new cars, that is 50% growth in the class. What keeps a class growing is consistency. Change does not encourage racers to build cars. I have seen it firsthand changing rules to allow faster E.T’s kills classes and drives the cost of racing out of the reach of the racers and then the class slowly goes away. I know this is my first year racing in the PTRA but I have been around the block a few times with this and participated in another class that this happened to. I think with a few well thought out small rules changes the racing could be kept at the current normal 6.0x @ 113 area and the racing will be just as tight and exciting as it was this past year. And for the racers that want to go faster look at the True Street rules? That class could use a boost in car count? I would hate to see any of the current racers in this class leave. But this class is for a lack of better words an “entry level heads up class” that is running great E.T.’s !
Rules suggestions:
• Smaller nitrous jet 65 or even go a little smaller if needed?
• Weight break (50lbs.) for large CI small block Ford motors?
• Allow 335 CI to 360 CI motors with a 50 nitrous jet? This will bring in the 347 Ford crowd and the 350 Chevy guys. If the jet is to big make an adjustment as needed. Just put it in the rules that the jet is subject to change depending on E.T.
These are just a few things I have been thinking about and wanted to get it out there to see what kind of feedback I could get and to see what the rest of you guys are thinking.
