I have in process a bbc that I am going to put in my little S10 to try and run one of the classes here, 471 max cubic inches. My question is on my heads I have acquired. They are the 781 heads. Are these heads worth putting the bigger valves in and if so what is the max HP or better yet TQ numbers you have made with them? I am trying to go budget racing, LOL
I appreciate the advise

Jason, Theres no such thing as "BUDGET" Racing. Just don't tell my wife.
Those heads are 336781? I think those are an open chamber 454 head used in the 73 or 74 year models. They are also oval port heads. It will take alot of work (ie port work, good valve job and some valve unshrouding in the chamber) I just read an article this month in Chevy High performance or popular hot rodding? I can't remember which one, about this subject and I feel that you will be better off running a 310 or 320 runner Dart, edelbrock or World products type alum head. For the money and weight savings you can't go wrong with one of these aftermarket heads.
Jason, I think RHS makes a real good head too. That's what I think they used in the article I read. David Vizard wrote it too.

I have heard that Herberts uses bulk valves and springs(Chinese) and they had problems with them breaking. I wouldn't buy any thing from Herbert's, much less a set of heads that they put together at there place. Maybe a bare casting but not complete.

Appreciate the info here. I will have to check out the herbert catalog for bare castings and build them Thank you so much Jason

Jason, I might be able to save you some time and money on this combo.
I got a set of Eldebrock 454-0 heads #EDE60459 That are like new. Been run 3 races and my customer changed bigger engine combo due to rule change. They have had a valve spring upgrade to better chrome vanadium springs, bowls blended and been port matched to a Victor Dominator Intake #EDE2909. They set the track record on a 496 BBC in a mud truck.
I have about $2500 in these heads and intake not counting porting work and I don't need them anymore. Will let go for $1700. Let me know if you are interested. Steve

Thats a deal Coyote. Jason, I got more than that in my World product heads and I have done all of the Port work and assembly. I had someone else do the valve job.

I have a set of merlin heads, with 2.300 intakes and 1.880 ex, they have been 5.00's on a dragster with 496CI. they are heavily ported, with good valves, springs and titanium retainers.
$ 900.00
